A video going viral on social media (here, here here, and here) claims to show the police catching two Muslim men with guns hidden in ghee cans. Let’s verify the truth behind the video in this article.

Claim: A video shows the police catching two Muslim men with guns hidden in ghee cans.

Fact: The viral video dates back to 23 September 2019, when the Delhi Police Special Cell arrested two men, Jitendra and Raj Bahadur, in the Ghazipur area with 26 pistols and hidden in ghee cans. DCP Pramod Kushwaha of the Special Cell identified the accused and stated that acting on a tip-off about an illegal arms supplier from Madhya Pradesh, the police stopped a vehicle and found the pistols dipped in ghee inside large cans. The accused are not Muslim. Hence, the claim made in the post is Misleading.

To verify the claim, we performed a Google keyword search and found an NDTV report (archive) from September 2019, featuring a screenshot of the viral video. According to the report, the Delhi Police Special Cell arrested two men in the Ghazipur area with 26 pistols hidden in ghee cans. Acting on information about an illegal arms supplier from Madhya Pradesh, on 23 September 2019, the police stopped a vehicle and discovered pistols dipped in ghee inside large cans. 

We also found a video (archive) on the Dilli Tak YouTube channel dated 27 September 2019, featuring DCP Pramod Kushwaha of the Special Cell. He identified the accused as Jitendra and Raj Bahadur, who were caught on 23 September 2019 after the police received a tip-off about an illegal arms supplier from Madhya Pradesh. During the operation, a Mahindra Bolero was stopped in Ghazipur, and two ghee cans were recovered from the vehicle. Upon inspection, 26 pistols and magazines concealed in the ghee were found.

The FIR pertaining to this incident identifies Jitendra and Raj Bahadur as accused, and legal proceedings (CNR No. DLND020285402019) were duly initiated in connection with the case.

To sum up, an old 2019 video of the Delhi Special Cell arresting two men with guns in ghee cans is shared with the false claim that the accused are Muslims.
