A screenshot of a signature is being shared on social media claiming that UNESCO has recognised this signature of Karnataka’s Honnavar town sub-registrar as the most spectacular signature in the world. Let’s verify the claim made in the post.

The archived version of the post can be seen here.

Claim: UNESCO declared Honnavar town sub-registrar officer’s signature as the most spectacular signature in the world.

Fact: UNESCO does not give any recognition or award for the best signature. The photo shared in the post shows the signature of Honnavar sub-registrar Shanthayya. But UNESCO did not recognise his signature as spectacular. Hence, the claim made in the post is FALSE.

When we searched to check whether UNESCO has ever recognised the best signature in the world, it is found out that as of now, UNESCO did not give any such recognition or award for best signature. We could not find any search results related to the Honnavar sub-registrar signature when we checked with keywords on the UNESCO website.

On reverse image search of the screenshot shared in the post, it is found out that photos of the same signature were being posted on social media at least since July 2018. The ‘One India Kannada’ published an article reporting the details of this signature on 05 August 2018.  ‘One India Kannada’ reported it as the artistic signature of Shanthayya, a sub-registrar working in Honnavar town in Karnataka. The ‘One India Kannada’ had also published a video showing the live visuals of Shanthayya signing on a paper. Shanthayya had reportedly created this signature to be unique and to not get forged by others. But this artistic signature of Honnavar sub-registrar Shanthayya has nothing to do with UNESCO.

To sum it up, this artistic signature of the Karnataka sub-registrar was not recognised as the most spectacular signature in the world by UNESCO.
