A social media post (here, and here) shows a photo of an Amul billboard featuring Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi caricatures, accompanied by text mocking the Gandhi family. The advertisement allegedly reads, “Grandfather ate, grandmother ate, father ate, mother ate, come sister you also eat, call brother-in-law as well”. Let’s verify the claim made in the post through this article.
Claim: A photo shows an Amul billboard mocking the Gandhi family.
Fact: The viral photo is digitally altered. The original billboard was used by Indiamart for advertising, while the caricature is from January 2019 when Amul topical marked Priyanka Gandhi’s entry into politics. Further, the text mocking the Gandhi family has been digitally altered and added. Additionally, replying to a 2019 X post, Amul clarified that the viral billboard mocking the Gandhi family was fake and shared the original topical to refute the claim. Hence, the claim made in the post is FALSE.
A Google Lens search of the viral photo led us to the original photo (archived) of this billboard that Indiamart used for advertising.
We found that the same billboard has been digitally altered to appear like an Amul ad mocking the Gandhi family. The comparison can be seen below:
Further, we conducted a Google search and found an X post (archived) by Amul, dated 24 January 2019, featuring the same caricature with the caption: “#Amul Topical: Priyanka Gandhi joins politics!”
We also found a report from The Indian Express(archived) dated 24 January 2019, stating that the Amul brand shared the original topical in January 2019 to mark Priyanka Gandhi’s entry into active politics. The topical showed Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi, the brother-sister duo, toasting with bread and butter.
Additionally, we found an old 2019 X post (archived) featuring the same viral billboard mocking the Gandhi family. In response, Amul clarified, stating, “Dear Sir, It is a fake post. Amul has not released this topical. The original topical is shared below.”
To sum up, the viral photo of an Amul billboard mocking the Gandhi family is digitally altered and recirculated again.
