Rahul Gandhi immediately corrected himself after mentioning litre as the unit of measure for Atta

A video of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is being widely shared on social media claiming that Rahul Gandhi had stated ‘litre’ as the unit of measure for Atta (Wheat flour). In the video, Rahul Gandhi was seen saying, “Atta was Rs 22 per litre. Today it is Rs 40 per litre”. Let’s verify the claim made in the post.

Claim: Video of Rahul Gandhi stating ‘litre’ as the unit of measure for Atta (Wheat flour).

Fact: Rahul Gandhi indeed misstated the units of Atta in litres while comparing the prices of different commodities at the ‘Halla Bol’ rally, held on 04 September 2022 in New Delhi. But Rahul Gandhi immediately corrected his mistake and said it is measured in kilograms. The clipped video shared in the post did not show the portion of Rahul Gandhi correcting his mistake. Hence, the claim made in the post is MISLEADING.

When we searched for the details of the video using relevant keywords on the internet, an extended version of the video is found in a tweet made by ‘ANI’ on 04 September 2022. ANI tweeted the video stating, “Congress MP Rahul Gandhi talks about price rise in petrol, diesel and Atta, during the party’s ‘Halla Bol’ rally against inflation”. From 0:39 minutes of the video, Rahul Gandhi was seen saying, “Atta was Rs 22 per litre. Today it is Rs 40 per litre. Ahh… Kg”.

The full video of the ‘Hall Bol’ rally was published on the Indian National Congress YouTube channel, on 04 September 2022. From the 1:52:14 time stamp of the video, Rahul Gandhi was seen saying, “In 2014, LPG gas cylinder price was 410 rupees. Today it was 1050 rupees. Petrol was Rs 70 per litre. Today it was almost Rs 100 per litre. Diesel was Rs 55 per litre, today it is Rs 90 per litre. Mustard oil was Rs 90 per litre, today it is Rs 200 per litre. Milk was Rs 35 per litre, today it is Rs 60 per litre. Atta was Rs 22 per litre, today it is Rs 40 per litre. Ahh…Kg”. While comparing the prices of various commodities in 2014 & now, Rahul Gandhi misstated Atta unit as litre. But he immediately corrected his mistake and said it is measured in kilograms (kgs). The clipped video shared in the post did not show the portion of Rahul Gandhi correcting his mistake.

The Indian National Congress YouTube channel published another video specifically showing only Rahul Gandhi’s speech at the Halla Bol rally. This video clipped the portion of Rahul Rahul Gandhi’s statement, “Atta was Rs 22 per litre. Today it is Rs 40 per litre”, and projected as if he had stated the unit of Atta in kilogram.

To sum it up, Rahul Gandhi indeed mentioned the unit of measure of Atta as litre but he immediately corrected his mistake and said it was measured in kilograms.
