A message that informs women to contact the Nirbhaya Helpline number ‘9833312222’ in case of emergency is doing the rounds widely on social media in the aftermath of the gruesome rape & murder of a veterinary doctor in Hyderabad. Let’s check to what extent the message is true.

Claim: ‘9833312222’ is the Helpline number for women safety during an emergency.

Fact: The Nirbhaya Helpline number ‘9833312222’ was started by the Mumbai Railway Police in 2015 for the safety of women travelling on the city’s trains. And, the helpline has been discontinued in February- 2018. So, the claim is FALSE

When searched on Google with the text ‘nirbhaya helpline number 9833312222’, many search results of it were obtained. A link among them had the information that the Nirbhaya Helpline number ‘9833312222’ was started by Mumbai Railway Police for the safety of Mumbai women. When searched on Google with this information, an article of ‘Mumbai Mirror’ was found. The information in the article corroborated that, in 2015, the Mumbai Railway Police started the Nirbhaya Helpline number ‘9833312222’ for the safety of women travelling on the city’s trains.

When searched if the Nirbhaya Helpline service is still operational, a search result indicated that the Mumbai railway police had closed the helpline number in 2018. That webpage is not currently functional, but the same can be noticed in their archived version.

To conclude, the Nirbhaya helpline number ‘9833312222’ was started by the Mumbai Railway Police in 2015 for the safety of women travelling on the city’s trains. Its services were discontinued in 2018.
