A post is being widely shared on social media claiming that Amul Milk’s owner Anand Seth had fired 1.38 lakh workers for eating Beef. Let us fact-check the claim made in the post.
Claim: Anand Seth, Amul Milk’s owner had fired 1.38 lakh workers for eating Beef.
Fact: Amul is the flagship brand of Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd. (GCMMF), an apex organisation of the Dairy Cooperatives of Gujarat. Since it is a cooperative society, it is not owned by any one individual. There are 36 lakh milk producer members in the GCMMF. There are no recent news reports about Amul firing any of its workers. Hence, the claim made in the post is FALSE.
Amul is the flagship brand of Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd. (GCMMF), India’s largest food products marketing organisation. Amul Milk is one such brand. GCMMF is the Apex organisation of the Dairy Cooperatives of Gujarat, popularly known as ‘AMUL’. Since it is a cooperative society, it is not owned by any one individual. In fact, its present chairman is Shamalbhai B Patel, Vice Chairman is Valamjibhai R Humbal. The Managing Director of the cooperative is RS Sodhi. So, there is no mention of Anand Seth as the owner of Amul Milk.
There is no recent news report about Amul having fired its workers. Amul is one of the most popular brands in India. If at all it fired 1.38 lakh workers, it would have been reported by various news organisations. Even official social media handles of Amul, on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram did not mention anything about firing its workers recently.
When Aajtak approached RS Sodhi, the Managing Director of GCMMF, he refuted the claim. ‘Amul doesn’t even have 1.38 lakh employees, then how can we fire them. Amul is a cooperative with no owner. Amul is owned by lakhs of farmers who supply milk to it. Amul doesn’t discriminate based on caste and religion,’ he told Aajtak.
To sum it up, Amul did not fire 1.38 lakh workers for eating beef.
