A video that is widely shared on social media (here, here, and here) shows an explosion during a funeral procession. The captions of the post claim, “Israel placed a time bomb inside the body of a terrorist and returned it to the Palestinians, leading to the explosion you see.” Let’s find out the truth behind the video through this article.
Claim: Israel put a time bomb in the dead body of a terrorist and returned it to Palestinians.
Fact: The video dates back to July 2012 from a funeral procession in a Damascus suburb of Syria of a man who was reportedly killed by government forces. The explosion is believed to be caused by a car bomb organized by the government, resulting in around 85 deaths. The viral video has no connection with the recent incident in Israel. Hence, the claim made in the post is FALSE.
A reverse image search of keyframes from the viral video revealed that it originated from an original Euro News video titled “Funeral Attack in Syria – Claims,” published in July 2012. This confirms that the video is not recent.
Taking clues from the description of the video, a relevant keyword search led us to a CNN article that describes the events of the video.
CNN reports that the video shows a large funeral procession in a Damascus suburb for a man who was reportedly killed by government forces. His body was covered with a Syrian revolutionary flag, and the crowd was chanting anti-government slogans. The explosion is believed to be caused by a car bomb organized by the government, resulting in around 85 deaths.
On 18 August 2024, a bomb explosion in Tel Aviv killed the attacker and injured a bystander. Hamas, in collaboration with Palestinian Islamic Jihad, claimed responsibility, describing it as a “martyrdom operation.” The blast occurred shortly after the U.S. Secretary of State arrived in the city for Gaza ceasefire talks.
To sum up, an old video of Syria has been falsely shared as a recent incident from Israel
