A video (here, here, and here) of Jawaharlal Nehru is being widely shared across social media platforms with the claim that Nehru admitted he was not involved in the fight for Indian independence; and that he opposed the Indian independence movement. In the video, we can hear, “I wasn’t involved in the fight for independence at all; in fact, he opposed it.” Through this article, let’s fact-check the claim made in the post.

The archived version of this post can be found here.

Claim: Visuals of Jawaharlal Nehru admitting that he was not involved in the fight for Indian independence.

Fact: This viral video has been edited. The original interview footage of Nehru has been clipped, edited, and shared out of context to spread misinformation, falsely suggesting that Nehru admitted he was not involved in the fight for Indian independence. In the unedited video, Nehru actually states, “Mr. Jinnah was not involved in the fight for independence at all. In fact, he opposed it.” Hence the claim made in the post is FALSE.

To verify the authenticity of the viral video, we conducted a Google reverse image search using key frames from the video. This search led us to an interview video of Jawaharlal Nehru shared on the official YouTube channel of ‘Prasar Bharati’ (India’s state-owned public broadcaster) on 14 May 2019, titled “Jawaharlal Nehru’s Last TV Interview – May 1964.” According to the video description, it was Nehru’s last significant interview, hosted by American TV host Arnold Mich.

Upon reviewing the entire video, we found that the viral clip of Nehru starts at the timestamp 14:50 and ends at 15:45. In this segment, Nehru can be seen referring to Muhammad Ali Jinnah, a prominent leader of the Muslim League, while making his statement.

At the timestamp 14:35, the interviewer says, “You and Mr. Gandhi and Mr. Jinnah. You were all involved at that point of Independence and then partition….in the fight for Independence of India from the British domination.” Nehru responded, “Mr. Jinnah was not involved in the fight for Independence at all. In fact, he opposed it. Muslim League was started in about 1911, I think. It was started really by the British, encouraged by them so as to create factions, they did succeed to some extent. And ultimately, there came the partition.” From this, it is clear that a part of Nehru’s interview video has been clipped, edited, and shared out of context to disseminate misinformation, suggesting that Nehru admitted he was not involved in the fight for Indian independence.

Factly has previously debunked another clip from this same interview video, which claimed that Nehru boasted in an interview that he himself had decided on the partition of India which can be seen here.

To sum up, an edited video is being shared, falsely claiming that Nehru admitted he was not involved in the fight for Indian independence.
