A post with a newspaper article is being shared on social media which claims that SC scholarships are going to be stopped from the next term by the central government. Let’s verify the claim made in the post.

Claim: The central government is going to stop providing scholarships for SC students from the next term.

Fact: The article mentioned in the post is from 2018. The union government stopped the pre-matric scholarship scheme for SCs and other minorities in classes 1 to 8 from 2022 as the Right to Education Act covers compulsory free education up to class 8. Hence, the claim made in the post is Misleading.

On conducting a reverse image search of the newspaper article in the post, we found that the article was mentioned in a blog post published in the year 2018. It states that, the Central government will not provide scholarships for SC students from the next session and that the state will have to raise the entire budget from its own resources. However, the article does not specifically mention the name of the scholarship that the central government was going to stop funding for.

Subsequent research on scholarship schemes discontinued by the Central government found that the union government has stopped the pre-matric scholarship for SC, ST, OBC, and minority students of classes 1 to 8 from the academic year 2022-23 as the Right to Education Act (RTE) covers compulsory free education up to class 8 for all students. Only students in classes 9 and 10 are now covered under the pre-metric scholarship scheme. The other scholarships discontinued by the central government to SC and other minorities are

  • Post-matric scholarship for SC and ST students studying in general courses
  • Post-matric scholarship for SC and ST students studying in professional and technical courses
  • Begum Hazrat Mahal national scholarship for meritorious girl students belonging to minority communities

To sum up, a 2018 article stating that the central government will stop scholarships for SC students from the next term shared as recent.
