Edited video is being shared as visuals of roads from Shanghai, China

A video accompanied by a post is being widely shared on social media claiming that the visuals in the video are from Shanghai, China. Let us fact-check the claim made in the post.

Claim: Visuals of roads in Shanghai, China.

Fact: The video had been edited. The same intersection had been replicated several times with a few seconds time delay and these were integrated to make the video. The video has the exact same vehicles in the same formation each step down. The visuals of the Nanpu Bridge in Shanghai look similar to the video but the Bridge has only one ringed-lane. Hence the claim made in the post is FALSE.

When the video is closely observed, the same intersection had been replicated several times with a few seconds time delay and these were integrated to make the video. One needs to pay attention to the repeating concentric patterns and the cars moving in unison. The whole video looks like an overlapping loop.

The green truck on the second and fourth ring move in unison and look the same, moving in the same direction.

The yellow car and the red truck in the third ring had been replicated at least three times in the video.

The video has been edited as one can see the exact same vehicles in the same formation each step-down. Every other path over the first ring has the cars driving in the exact same formation; and the cars seem to be of the exact same shape and colour.

When reverse image search is done on the screenshots of the video, there are similar videos (here and here) online which are being shared as though they are from Shanghai’s Nanpu Bridge. These are being widely shared on TikTok, which found their way into other social media platforms. The exact source of the viral video could not be found. However, there is an article which says that ‘special effects of Shanghai Nanpu Bridge became popular on TikTok’ and that those videos are being viewed by millions of users.

A YouTube video of Shanghai Nanpu Bridge had similar visuals when compared to the viral video, but the actual Bridge doesn’t have so many ringed-lanes.

The Nanpu Bridge is one of the main bridges of Shanghai which links it with the Pudong district across the river Huangpu. ‘The bridge’s special design and location also make it an attraction for locals and travellers, even more spectacular by night.’ Images of Nanpu bridge can be seen here and here.

To sum it up, this video being shared as the roads from Shanghai, China had been edited.
