A post containing a video of an explosion is going viral on social media. The post description in Kannada translates to ‘Watch this video to know what happens if you leave your mobile phone charged overnight for any reason. ‘Let’s fact-check the claim in this article.

Claim: Visuals of a mobile phone exploding for charging it overnight.

Fact: The blast incident in the video occurred in 2019 in an apartment in the Chinese city of Shanghai. Reportedly, a battery of an electric scooter exploded while charging. Hence the claim made in the post is MISLEADING.

With the help of Invid, we extracted individual frames from the video of our post. A reverse image search on TinEye with the frames led us to a news report published on Dantri.com. The news report contains a lengthier version of the video shared in the post.

We also observed that the post’s video is a cropped version of the original video from the News report.

Reportedly, a battery of an electric scooter exploded while it was being charged in an apartment in the Chinese city of Shanghai. The incident happened in 2019. We looked for further evidence and searched the internet with relevant keywords. We found a video story published by the South China Morning Post and a post on the online news community Newsflare.com, which confirmed that the incident occurred in Shanghai and an electric scooter’s battery exploded.

To sum it up, a video of an electric scooter battery explosion is falsely shared as a mobile phone battery exploding for charging it overnight.
