A post with a video is being widely shared on social media with a claim that police are evicting people out of their homes in Assam after the NRC (National Register of Citizens). Let’s analyze the claim made in the post.

The archived version of the post can be found here.

Claim: Video of police evicting people out of their homes in Assam after the NRC.

Fact: The video is related to an anti-encroachment drive taken up by Jaipur Development Authority (JDA). It shows people obstructing the anti-encroachment squad when they are trying to demolish the walls constructed illegally in a colony. Hence the claim is FALSE.

From the ‘DD News’ article, it can be found that the names of over 19 lakh people were excluded from the final NRC list of Assam.

In the video, the logo on the dress of the Policemen is not that of the Assam Police. It is the logo of the Rajasthan Police.

When the screenshots of the video are subjected to reverse image search with a suitable filter, a tweet with the same video but with another claim was found. The tweet had a reply of ‘Jaipur Police’ in its comments section. In that reply, Jaipur Police enclosed a newspaper clip that had a still from the video. From that clip, it was found that the Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) had taken up an anti-encroachment drive and has demolished the structures constructed illegally in a colony. It was also mentioned that people have put women in the forefront to thwart the attempts of the anti-encroachment squad during that drive. So, the video is related to an incident in Rajasthan and has nothing to do with NRC in Assam.

To conclude, a video from Rajasthan is being falsely shared as ‘NRC eviction started in Assam’.
