Video from Nepal falsely shared as visuals of the glacial burst in Chamoli (Uttarakhand)

A video is being shared on social media with a claim that it shows the glacial burst in Chamoli (Uttarakhand) on 07 February 2021. Let’s fact-check the claim made in the post.

Claim: Video of the glacial burst in Chamoli (Uttarakhand) on 07 February 2021.

Fact: The posted video is not related to the recent glacial burst in Chamoli (Uttarakhand). The video was taken near Kapuche Glacier Lake in Nepal. Hence the claim made in the post is FALSE.

When the screenshots of the video were run through Google Reverse Image Search, the same video was found to be uploaded by multiple users in January 2021. A user Kiran Shrestha has uploaded a similar video on his YouTube channel with the title – ‘Kapuche lake 2021 (avalanche)’.

Kapuche Glacier Lake is in Nepal. The location in the video also matches with the Kapuche Glacier Lake visuals on Google Maps.

Also, ‘BBC News – Nepali’ has published an article in January 2021 on the same video posted by Kiran Shrestha.
