This video doesn’t show fireworks in Delhi for Diwali; it is from New Year celebrations in Italy

In the context of the Supreme Court supporting Delhi Government’s decision to ban all types of firecrackers till 01 January 2023 citing air pollution, a video of massive fireworks lighting up the night sky is being shared claiming it shows Diwali Celebrations in Delhi 2022. Claim: Video of people bursting fireworks in Delhi on the occasion of Diwali 2022.

Fact: The video is actually from the New Year’s Celebrations 2022 in Naples, Italy. When the Mayor of Naples banned the use of fireworks in the city citing COVID-19, people of the Naples opposed the decision by bursting massive fireworks. Hence the claim made in the post is MISEADING.

We ran a reverse image search and found that the same video was already uploaded on Twitter by Steve Hanke, a Professor at John Hopkins University, on 03 January 2022. The accompanying description reads, “The Mayor of Naples, Italy cited COVID as the reason to ban fireworks on New Year’s Eve. But the Neapolitan were having none of it. Watch as fireworks light up the Italian night this past NYE”

According to Ruptly, fireworks lit up the sky in Naples on New Year’s Eve despite a ban on attendees.

According to Times of India, even in Delhi, flouting the ban imposed on firecrackers, people burst firecrackers in many parts of Delhi. But the viral video doesn’t show these incidents.

To sum it up, video from 2022 New Year’s celebrations in Naples, Italy is shared as fireworks in Delhi on the occasion of Diwali 2022.
