Two videos depicting gruesome incidents of murder are currently circulating, claiming them to be instances of ‘love jihad’ incidents that occurred within a week in Delhi. Let’s verify the claim made in the post.
Claim: Visuals of two murders, presented as occurrences of ‘love jihad,’ that happened in Delhi recently.
Fact: While the second clip shows the recent incident of a Muslim youth murdering his girlfriend in Delhi, the first clip depicts a separate incident where a Hindu father murdered his daughter in Surat, Gujarat due to a dispute over sleeping on the terrace. The first clip is not related to any communal or religious conflicts. Hence the claim made in the post is MISLEADING.
An internet search with relevant keywords led us to a video of a news bulletin published by the ‘News 18 Gujarati’ YouTube channel on 22 May 2023. According to this news report, the viral footage depicts a man murdering his daughter in the Surat district of Gujarat on 18 May 2023.
Following the lead of this report, we further searched for information about the incident and found a media report by Indian Express and the First Information Report (FIR). According to these reports, Ramanuj Mahadev Sahoo (45) from Satyanarayan Nagar Society in Kadodara, Surat, had an argument with his wife Rekhadevi and their daughter Chandakumari (19) on Thursday night over sleeping on the terrace. Sahoo attacked Rekhadevi with a knife, injuring her right hand, and then stabbed Chandakumari multiple times, resulting in her death. Sahoo fled the scene but was later arrested from a friend’s room in Kadodara.
Likewise, the second clip depicts an incident that occurred in Delhi’s Shahbad Dairy area on 28 May 2023. The incident involved the brutal murder of a 16-year-old girl named Sakshi, by her boyfriend Sahil, who is 20 years old. The incident took place in full view of the public. Sahil has been apprehended by the police and an investigation is underway. (Due to the sensitive nature of the matter, FIR pertaining to this incident has not been made public yet).
To sum it up, the first clip depicts a disturbing incident in Surat, Gujarat, where a Hindu father killed his daughter, while the second clip portrays a Muslim youth murdering his Hindu girlfriend in Delhi.
