A post is being shared on social media claiming that banks across the country will remain closed for 15 days in August 2021. The ‘Telangana Today’ news website had published an article reporting the same. Let’s verify the claim made in the post.

An archived version of the post can be seen here.

Claim: Banks across the country will remain closed for 15 days in August 2021.

Fact: According to the RBI website, eight holidays are listed in addition to Saturdays (Second and Fourth) and Sundays in August 2021. But, these holidays are not uniform and vary from state to state in view of the specific festivals observed in different states. Of these eight holidays, the maximum applicable holidays to one particular region is only three. Hence, the claim made in the post is MISLEADING.

On looking at the Holiday calendar for 2021 on the Reserve Bank of India website, it can be observed that eight holidays are listed, in addition to Saturdays (second and fourth) and Sundays in August 2021. But, all these eight holidays are not listed for all regional offices across the country. In fact, not even one regional office has all the listed eight holidays. While 13 August 2021 is listed as a holiday only at Imphal, 31 August 2021 is listed as a holiday only in Hyderabad. The maximum applicable holidays to one particular region is only three. These are for Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram regions.

Several news websites have published articles with a similar description that banks are going to remain shut for 15 Days in August 2021. They can be seen here and here. But, these articles emphasized that the eight holidays vary from state to state in view of specific festivals observed in different states.

To sum it up, the 15 listed bank holidays in August 2021 are not observed across all states in the country.
