Old visuals from the North East are being attributed to recent landslides along the Karnataka-Goa highway

Update (15 July 2022):

Lately, the same visuals are also being circulated, claiming that the visuals show recent landslides in Kurnool- Srisailam route in Andhra Pradesh. However, we could not find any recent reports of any landslides in this area.

A popular media agency falsely reported the same visuals attributing them to landslides which occurred in Nashik of Maharashtra. It is true that multiple cities of Maharashtra are reeling under heavy rains, and as per a report ‘the road connectivity from Nashik district to Gujarat, through the Surgana taluka, was affected after a bridge got submerged and a landslide took place on the highway.’

However, the viral visuals are not related to the Nashik landslides, as they are very old visuals and most likely from the North East.

A social media post accompanying a video of a landslide is being widely shared with a claim that the visuals show a recent landslide that occurred along the Belagavi-Goa Road. Through this article let’s fact-check the claim made in the post.

Claim: Visuals related to the Belagavi-Goa landslides.

Fact: These visuals are not related to the recent landslides, which occurred along the Karnataka-Goa highway. These visuals may be from the Northeastern states. Few news agencies reported these as visuals from Mizoram in June 2022, whereas few local reports attributed these visuals to landslides that occurred in Assam in June 2022. Though the exact location of the video is not known, the availability of these visuals on the internet from June 2022 suggests that these visuals have nothing to do with the recent landslides, which occurred along the Karnataka-Goa highway. Hence the claim made in the post is MISLEADING.

Earlier this week, a couple of incidents of landslides were reported at Anmod Ghat, leading to the closure of the Karnataka-Goa stretch. Media agencies have reported these incidents, and visuals related to landslides can be viewed here and here.

However, the viral visuals have nothing to do with the recent landslides along the Karnataka-Goa Road line. These visuals may be from the northeast and related to the landslides that occurred earlier in June 2022.

A reverse image search of the viral visuals yielded few news reports, which attribute these visuals to the Northeast. While few reports claim that the visuals are from Mizoram (here & here), other local reports claim that the visuals are from Assam (here, here & here).

It is true that the northeast states have been reeling under heavy rains for the past one month. Several incidents of landslides have also been reported across different states. Media reports related to these landslides can be read here and here. Although we could not independently verify the location of the viral visuals, the availability of these visuals on the internet from June 2022 suggests that the visuals are not related to the recent landslides along the Karanataka-Goa Road.

To sum it up, old visuals from the North East are being attributed to recent landslides along the Karnataka-Goa highway.
