Old video of International Fleet Review is passed off as Diwali celebrations by Indian Navy

A post with a video of illuminated ships and fireworks is being widely shared on social media with the claim that the video shows Diwali celebrations by Indian Navy. Through this article let’s fact-check the claim made in the post.

Claim: Diwali celebrations by Indian Navy.

Fact: The video actually shows fireworks and illuminated warships displayed during International Fleet Review which happened in Visakhapatnam back in 2016. Several news agencies shared images and videos of the event. Hence the claim made in the post is FALSE.

Reverse image search of the screenshots of the video in the post led us to a 2016 YouTube video which carried visuals similar to the one in the post. The description of the video reads ‘Lit up warships of the Indian Navy fire flares on Bay of Bengal’.

Taking a cue from the date and description of the YouTube video, further Google search with relevant keywords led us to few news articles which carried images similar to the visuals of the video. According to these articles, these images are related to International Fleet Review which happened in 2016 in Visakhapatnam. These articles can be read here and here.

Further search led us to tweets dated back to 2016 by ANI and Indian navy which shared the images of the event with a caption associating these images to International Fleet Review. The full video footage of the event is shared by Prime Minister Modi on his official YouTube account which can be seen here.

To sum it up, video related to International Fleet Review in 2016 is falsely linked to Diwali celebrations by Indian Navy.
