Old video of Azam Khan stating that Lord Ram is his ideal is being circulated as a recent one

Samajwadi Party leader Azam recently was recently in May 2022, released from the jail on bail, after spending almost 27 months in prison. It is in this context, a video of Azam Khan saying that Lord Ram is his ideal is being widely shared with a claim alluding that he uttered these words recently after releasing from the prison. The loose translation of his Hindi speech reads ‘Yogi ji Mughal is not our ideal, our ideal is Ram, our ideal is Kishan ji too.’ Through this article let’s fact-check the claim made in the post.

Claim: Azam Khan recently claimed that Lord Ram is his ideal and not Mughals.

Fact: It is true that Azam Khan stated that Lord Ram and Krishna are his ideals and not Mughals. However, he did it in 2017, speaking at the SP’s national convention. Multiple news reports have reported his statements back then. There are no reports of him reiterating the same recently after being released from prison. Hence the claim made in the post is MISLEADING.

In May 2022, Supreme Court granted interim bail to Azam Khan in a cheating case and he is now currently campaigning for the Azamgarh Lok Sabha by poll.

While it is true that senior Samajwadi party leader Azam Khan had stated that Lord Ram is his ideal, he did not say this recently, but way back in 2017.

Google search with relevant keywords yielded 2017 news reports which reported Azam Khan’s statements in the national convention of Samajwadi Party (here & here).

Further search yielded the video footage of the SP’s national convention, in which Azam Khan spoke these words. At 15:13 time stamp of the video, we can hear Azam saying the exact words, that Lord Ram and Krishna are their ideals and not Mughals. Further, there are no reports of him stating the same, after being released from prison.

To sum it up, an old video of Azam Khan stating that Lord Ram is his ideal is being circulated as a recent one.
