In the light of the recent incidents of communal violence in Tripura, a social media post with the video of a large gathering of Muslims is being shared with a claim that Muslims in Tripura came out in protest of the recent communal violence in Tripura. Through this article, let’s fact-check the claim made in the post.

Claim: Video of Tripura Muslims protesting against the recent incidents of communal violence in the state.

Fact: This video is available on internet at least since May 2021. Social media users shared the video as of the funeral procession of Hazrat Abdul Hameed Mohammad Salimul Qadri, Badauni (Uttar Pradesh). The availability of this video from May 2021 proves that the video has nothing to do with the current incidents in Tripura. Hence, the claim made in the post is FALSE.

We found that neither this video is related to Tripura nor the men in the video are protesting. Upon keyword search, we came across a Facebook post which shared a lengthier and high-resolution version of the same video.

The video is shared on 09 May 2021, with a description in Hindi which loosely translates to ‘Last Journey of Hazrat Peer Salim Miya Sahab Badauni’. Also halfway through the video, we could hear ‘Peer sahab zindabad’ and ‘la ilaha illallah” slogans.

Taking a cue from this, further search with keywords led us to a news article that reported the funeral procession of the Hazrat Abdul Hameed Mohammad Salimul Qadri, who passed away on 09 May 2021 in Badauni, UP. Few other news articles related to the funeral can be read here and here.

This article published an image related to the funeral procession. In the background of the published image, we can spot a gate-like structure, which is also clearly visible in the high-resolution version of the viral video. This indicates that the viral video is also from Uttar Pradesh.

Although we could not independently verify the context of the procession, the availability of the video on the internet since May 2021 proves that it has nothing to do with the recent communal violence in Tripura.

To sum it up, an old video of a Muslim procession in UP is passed off as Muslims protest in Tripura against communal violence.
