Old video from Spain shared as the visuals of high tides caused by Cyclone Biparjoy in Gujarat

A video is being widely shared on social media claiming it is the recent visuals of high tides caused by Cyclone Biparjoy in the coastal areas of Somanth and Dwaraka in Gujarat. Let’s verify the claim made in the post.

Claim: Video of high sea waves caused by cyclone Biparjoy in the coastal areas of Somanth and Dwaraka in Gujarat.

Fact: The video shared in the post shows the sea waves crashing into the Paseo Nuevo in San Sebastian, Spain. The video was circulating on social media at least since 2021. The video has nothing to do with Cyclone Biparjoy. Hence, the claim made in the post is False.

On reverse image search of the screenshots of the video, the same video was found in circulation on social media at least since 2021. A few users shared the same video claiming it is the visuals of Cyclone Tauktae that hit Mumbai in 2021.

On searching for further sources, a video showing similar visuals was found published by a YouTube channel on 10 January 2021. From 1:44 minutes of the video, one could see the same visuals as seen in the video shared in the post. Mentioning it is a video from north of Spain, the description of the video stated- “It’s North of Spain, it happens roughly twice a year due to deep water sea wave that can reach up to 24m height”.

When we searched for further details, we found a video showing similar visuals of strong tides hitting a coast. This Facebook user mentioned it is the visuals of strong waves that hit the Paseo Nuevo area of San Sebastian in Spain. An image published on the ‘Getty’ website too showed a similar picture of strong waves crashing into the Paseo Nuevo in San Sebastian.

On comparing Google Maps images and images published by other websites of the Paseo Nuevo area in Spain with that of the visuals shown in the video, it is confirmed that the video shows old visuals from Paseo Nuevo in San Sebastian city of Spain.

To sum it up, an old video from Spain is shared as the visuals of high tides caused because of Cyclone Biparjoy in Gujarat.
