A video is being shared widely on social media with a claim that after Jharkhand Police had harassed poor fruit sellers who put saffron flags on their vegetable carts and fruit shops, residents of Jamshedpur have now put up saffron flags on their rooftops. Let’s fact-check the claim made in the post.

The archived version of the post can be found here.

Claim: Jamshedpur residents have put up saffron flags on their rooftops after Police removed saffron flags at fruit shops of some sellers.

Fact: On 25 April 2020, the Jamshedpur Police have removed ‘Hindu Fal Dukaan’ banners at some fruit stalls. But the posted video is on the internet at least since 02 April 2020. So, the video was not taken after the removal of banners. Also, the video is not related to Jamshedpur. Hence the claim made in the post is FALSE.

When searched about Jamshedpur police removing saffron flags at vegetable and fruit shops, it was found that the Jamshedpur Police have removed ‘Hindu Fal Dukaan’ banners at some fruit stalls on 25 April 2020. The tweet by Jamshedpur Police regarding the incident can be seen here. Also, news articles can be read here and here.

On observing the posted video, in one frame at 9 seconds, a lighthouse-like structure can be seen. But Jamshedpur is not located on the coast (Even Jharkhand State does not have a coastline). So, when searched further, the same video (archived) posted by another user was found. But, in that video, a TikTok username (@mitest.makwana.hindu) can be seen.

So, when searched on his TikTok account, it was found that he uploaded (archived) the same video on 2 April 2020. So, the video was not taken after the removal of banners.

On his account, a lot of other similar videos with saffron flags can be seen. He has also mentioned in some videos that the videos were taken at his village – ‘Nava Bandar’. Nava Bandar is a coastal village in Gujarat. Also, a similar lighthouse, as seen in the posted video, can be seen in his other video. Also, on the map, a lighthouse can be located in the Nava Bandar village.

To sum it up, an old and unrelated video falsely shared as ‘Saffron flags on Jamshedpur houses after Police removed flags at fruit shops’
