Edited video shared as visuals of PM Modi overstating the numbers of tap water supply beneficiaries

A couple of video clips of PM Narendra Modi’s speeches in the Parliament are being shared on social media claiming that PM Modi was caught overstating the numbers of the beneficiaries under the Nal Jal Yojana. The post claims that on 08 February 2023, Narendra Modi stated the number of tap water connection beneficiaries as 8 crores, but on the next day, he increased the number of beneficiaries to 11 crores while addressing the parliament. This post claims that within a span of 24 hours, Narendra Modi increased the number of beneficiaries under the Nal Jal Yojana by 3 crores. Let’s verify the claim made in the post.

Claim: Video clips showing Narendra Modi overstating the numbers of tap water beneficiaries in the country.

Fact: The video shared in the post is an edited one. On 08 February 2023, PM Narendra Modi stated the number of beneficiaries who were provided tap water connections under the current government as 8 crores. On 09 February 2023, during his speech in Rajya Sabha, Narendra Modi stated that the total number of tap water beneficiaries in the country as 11 crores, including the 3 crores tap water connections issued under the previous governments before the term of the current government began 2014. Hence, the claim made in the post is Misleading.

When we searched for sources using relevant keywords on the internet, we found that the post shared the video clips of Narendra Modi’s reply to the motion of thanks to the President’s address in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha. Narendra Modi’s full speech in Lok Sabha on 08 February 2023 was found published on the ‘Sansad TV’ channel. Speaking about the achievements of the schemes initiated under their government, from 57:31 minutes of the video, Narendra Modi was seen saying- “Azaadi ka pachhathar saal beeth gayi, aat karor parivaaronko aaj nal se jal mila hai. Wo mathaye thumhare jut ko kaise swikar karenge?”(when translated to English: “It has been 75 years since independence, now 8 crore families have received water tap connections. How will those mothers accept your lies?”)

The full video of Narendra Modi’s reply to the motion of thanks to the President’s address in the Rajya Sabha, on 09 February 2023, can be seen here. From 13:13 minutes of the video, Narendra Modi was seen saying-“Azaadi ke pahle se ab tak, hum sarkar me aane tab tak, sirf theen karor gharo tak nal se jal milta tha. Aadarniy sabhapatiji, pichle theen char saal me aaj gyara karor gharanko nal se jal mil raha hey” (when translated to English: “From the time Independence, before the formation of our government, only 3 crore families in the country received water from tap connections. Respected Chairman, in the the past three-four years, 11 crore families are now receiving water from tap connections). Narendra Modi stated the number of total tap water beneficiaries in the country as 11 crores, including the 3 crores tap water connections issued under the previous governments before 2014.
