Update (22 May 2023): The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on 19 May 2023 has announced withdrawal of Rs 2000 notes from circulation. Details related to these have been announced. It also said that 2000 rupee notes can be exchanged before 30 September 2023.

Update (20 December 2022): As the message of Rs. 2,000 note ban from 1st of January went viral, PIB through a tweet clarified that viral message is fake, and urged everyone not to forward such misleading messages.

A video of an ‘ABP News’ channel news clip is being shared on social media claiming that from 01 January onwards, the government is introducing new Rs. 1,000 currency notes and is planning to ban Rs. 2,000 notes as legal tender. Further, the post claims that the government is willing to allow people only 10 days to deposit their old Rs. 2000 notes and that too within a maximum limit of Rs. 50,000 per head. Let’s verify the claim made in the post.

Claim: The government is planning to ban Rs. 2,000 notes as legal tender and is willing to introduce new Rs. 1,000 notes from 01 January 2023.

Fact: The post shared an edited video clip from the ‘Viral Sach’ episode published by the ‘ABP News’ channel on 26 December 2016. The full video of this episode shows the ‘ABP News’ channel debunking a viral message claiming the ban of Rs. 2,000 notes and the re-introduction of Rs. 1,000 notes from 01 January 2017. ‘ABP News’ in the report rated it as a false message and clarified that no such decision was taken by the government. Lately, the government did not announce any such plans of banning Rs. 2,000 notes and re-introducing the new Rs. 1,000 notes into the market. Hence, the claim made in the post is FALSE.

When we searched for this video using relevant keywords on the internet, we found the same video published on the ‘ABP News’ Facebook page on 26 December 2016. The 8:31 minutes long full version of the video shows ‘ABP News’ debunking a viral message on social media claiming the ban of Rs. 2,000 notes and the re-introduction of Rs. 1,000 notes from 01 January 2017.

In the full video of this ABP’s ‘Viral Sach’ episode published on 26 December 2016, ‘ABP News’ rated this viral message as fake and clarified that the government had not taken any such decision to ban Rs. 2,000 notes and introduce the new Rs. 1,000 notes as legal tender from 01 January onwards. ABP reported that RBI officials have confirmed that they have no such plans. The video shared in the post clipped the portion of ‘ABP News’ debunking the viral message. Following the demonetization move taken by the Narendra Modi led BJP government in November 2016, several such false messages related to the new Rs. 2,000 notes circulated on social media.  A few other ‘Viral Sach’ episodes of ‘ABP News’ debunking such false claims about Rs. 2,000 notes can be seen here and here.

In August 2017, the then Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said in the parliament that they are not considering any ban on Rs. 2,000 notes. Lately, neither the government nor the RBI announce any such plans to introduce the new Rs. 1,000 notes from 01 January 2023 onwards.

To sum it up, an edited ‘ABP News’ clip is being shared alleging that the government is planning to ban Rs. 2,000 notes and re-introduce Rs. 1000 notes from 01 January.
