A viral video (here, here, and here) on the internet allegedly shows a person getting caught for trying to smuggle weapons and hiding them underneath a burqa. It is claimed that this is how Muslims supply weapons in India. We will fact-check this claim through this article.
Claim: This video shows a person in India smuggling weapons underneath a burqa.
Fact: The viral video shows an incident that occurred in Bangladesh, not India. It shows a man caught by the Raozan police in Bangladesh. He was caught while smuggling drugs under the guise of a pregnant woman. Hence, the claim made in the post is Misleading.
To check the veracity of the viral claim, we performed a reverse image search on a few of the viral video’s keyframes. This search led us to a news report on the video uploaded by ‘Smile TV Bangla’ on 11 March 2021. It was reported that the police in Raozan, Chittagong, had arrested two persons for smuggling drugs in the guise of a pregnant woman. Raozan is located in Bangladesh, not India.
A further search led us to a few Bangladeshi news reports (here and here) on the incident. According to the reports, this incident took place on 9 March 2021.
After receiving secret info about the two drug traffickers, Raozan police arrested Sagar (20) and Amena Begum (19) by setting up a check post in the Jalil Nagar area of Chittagong-Rangamati Road. The accused were smuggling drugs under the guise of being a pregnant woman wearing a burqa.
Furthermore, the Raozan Police Station had also shared a news report published by ‘Raozan TV’ on their Facebook page.
To sum up, a video of a person caught smuggling drugs in Bangladesh is being shared as visuals of Muslims smuggling arms in India.
