A twitter post is being shared widely on social media regarding Arvind Kejriwal’s upcoming visit to the World Cities Summit, 2022 to be held in Singapore. The post claims, “The summit is of Mayors, Kejriwal is a Chief Minister. If he thinks he is just a mayor he should announce publicly”. Let’s fact-check the claim made in the post.
Claim: World Cities Summit, 2022 is exclusively for Mayors.
Fact: According to the official Website, Mayors, Ministers, Governors, business leaders etc. are attending this summit. In 2018, the then Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, N. Chandrababu Naidu had also participated in this summit. While a majority of the attendees are city leaders & mayors, it is not an exclusive event for mayors. Hence the claim made in this post is MISLEADING.
The Official website for World Cities Summit displays a list attendees for the event which will be held between 31 July – 03 August 2022 in Singapore. Among them, we can see Mayors, Ministers, Governors etc., from different countries. Surat Mayor, Hemali Boghawala can also be seen in the list of attendees.
Also, regarding this year’s summit, the website says, “ The Summit is a convening point for global mayors, business leaders and knowledge experts to exchange and co-create city solutions for liveable and sustainable cities, and will engage cities, businesses and experts at the highest levels to discuss how cities can emerge stronger through prolonged and unpredictable disruptions.”
Further research revealed that former & the then Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh N. Chandrababu Naidu also attended the World Cities Summit, 2018 and discussed the Challenges of building a new Capital city at Amaravati.
Singapore Government invited Kejriwal to this Summit on 01 June 2022. However, this visit needs clearance from PMO. Kejriwal is discontent with Central Government over delay in nod for Singapore Visit.
Hence, while a majority of the attendees of the World Cities Summit is mayors & city leaders, the 2022 summit is not exclusively for Mayors.
