A video showing the collapse of an elevated metro line or flyover is currently making rounds on social media platforms, with an assertion that the footage captures the failure of a newly constructed overhead metro structure in India. Through this article let’s fact-check the claim made in the post.

Claim: Video depicting the collapse of a newly constructed metro overhead in India.

Fact: The visuals depict the collapse of an under-construction bridge in the Lat Krabang district of Bangkok. Numerous news agencies in Bangkok reported on this incident. On comparing the visuals from the video with the location reported by the news agencies, it has been conclusively confirmed that the incident did take place in Bangkok. Hence, the claim made in the post is FALSE.

While the visuals show the collapse of an under-construction bridge, it’s important to note that the incident occurred in Bangkok and not in India. A reverse image search of the screenshots of the viral video led us to a Singapore-based YouTube channel that shared the same visuals stating that the incident happened in the Lat Krabang district of Bangkok.

Taking a cue from this, further search led us to several news reports regarding the collapse of an under-construction bridge in Lat Krabang, along the Luang Phaeng Road in Bangkok (here, here & here). According to these reports, the incident occurred on 10 July 2023, resulting in the unfortunate loss of two lives and leaving at least 17 people injured.

On comparing the images of the location (ptt petrol station) mentioned in the news reports, which are available on Google Maps, and the viral visuals, we have verified that the visuals indeed show an incident from Bangkok.

To sum it up, visuals of a bridge collapse in Bangkok are passed off as that of a newly constructed metro in India.
