A social media post casts doubt on the existence of the iPhone, asserting that a Japanese journalist filmed an iPhone 13 in 1980. The post includes visuals of a person holding a phone and claims the video, allegedly recorded in 1980, depicts people exploring abandoned Hiroshima, where an individual discovers an iPhone and mistakes it for a mirror (here & here). Claim: A video recorded in 1980 shows a person discovering an iPhone 13.

Fact: These visuals are from the Japanese series ‘The Woman Who Knew Too Much,’ which was produced in 2023. The creators of the series have clarified that it has no connection to Hiroshima and was made in 2023. Hence, the claim made in the post is FALSE.

The viral video does show a person holding a touchscreen mobile phone, but it was not filmed in 1980 as claimed. The video is actually from a Japanese short series produced in June 2023. A reverse image search of the screenshots from the viral video led us to the original footage from which the viral excerpt was taken.

The viral excerpt is from a 5-part Japanese series titled ‘The Woman Who Knew Too Much – The Woman Called Kiyoko Onoguchi.’ This series was uploaded to the YouTube channel ‘Movie-is-TV’ on 17 June 2023. The video description indicates that it is a work of fiction.

For further clarification, we contacted ‘Movie-is-TV’ for details about the series. They confirmed that they are the creators of the video and explained that ‘this video is a drama about a fictional incident set in Ehime, Japan. In the story, a reporter finds a smartphone in the perpetrator’s closet, implying that the culprit traveled back in time. Hiroshima has no connection to this narrative. We are outraged that someone has linked it to Hiroshima.’

According to the end credits, the series was filmed in 2023. Furthermore, the iPhone 13 was launched in 2021, and there are no reports of an iPhone being discovered in 1980, as claimed.

To sum up, visuals from a recent 2023 Japanese series are being falsely shared claiming that an iPhone 13 was filmed in 1980.
