Amid heavy rainfall in Mumbai during the third week of August 2025, a special notice allegedly released by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is being circulated on social media. The notice states that the water purification plant’s filter machine is damaged and will require 3–4 days to become operational, during which time water will be supplied without filtration. It also urges people to inform friends and family and take necessary precautions. We have also received several queries on our WhatsApp tipline (+91 92470 52470) asking us to verify whether this information is true. Through this article, let us fact-check the claim made in the post.

Claim: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will supply unfiltered water for the next few days due to a damaged filter machine.
Fact: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has not released any notice about supplying unfiltered water for 3–4 days. It clarified that the city’s water supply is clean, fully treated, and functioning normally, and called the viral message fake. Hence, the claim made in the post is FALSE.
To verify the claim, we searched the internet to check if the BMC had issued any notice about supplying unfiltered water for 3–4 days. No credible media reports or official information were found to support this.
We then checked the official website of BMC but found no notice or update about a damaged filter machine or plans to supply unfiltered water, indicating that the viral notice is not genuine.

We also came across an X post (archived) dated 20 August 2025 from the official account of the BMC dismissing the viral notice as fake. In the post, BMC clarified that the city continues to receive a regular supply of clean, disinfected, and fully treated water, and that the water supply system is functioning normally without any malfunctions. It further stated that false messages are being circulated on social media claiming that unfiltered water is being supplied due to a breakdown at the purification plant. BMC termed these claims baseless and urged citizens not to believe or spread such rumours while advising caution in sharing unverified information online.
To sum up, the viral notice about BMC supplying unfiltered water is fake; BMC confirmed the city’s water remains clean and unaffected.
