Video of miscreants surrendering to the Bangladesh Army is being shared with false claims linking it to India

A video showing two men attempting to vandalize a shop is being widely shared across social media platforms (here, here, and here). In the video, the men can be seen getting off a motorcycle and hitting the closed shop’s doors with axes. Meanwhile, army personnel passing by in a vehicle stop, point guns at the attackers, and approach them. As the soldiers with guns come closer, both attackers throw down their axes, kneel, and sit holding their ears. The claim accompanying the video suggests that the attackers, who intended to commit theft, surrendered upon seeing the Indian Army. In this article, we will fact-check the claim made in the post.

Fact: The video shows Bangladesh Army personnel taking custody of two men attempting to vandalize a shop. According to reports, this incident occurred on 14 August 2024 in Boalmari Upazila, Faridpur District, Bangladesh. The attack was a result of a dispute between two factions of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), with workers from one faction targeting the shop of the other. During the incident, soldiers from the Bangladesh Army arrested the attackers. Hence the claim made in the post is FALSE.

To gather details about the viral video, we conducted a Google reverse image search using keyframes from the video. This search led us to a video uploaded on 17 August 2024 by the YouTube channel of the Bangladeshi media outlet ‘Dhaka Post.’ According to the video description, the footage is from the Boalmari of Faridpur. Boalmari is an upazila of Faridpur District in central Bangladesh, located in the Dhaka Division. The incident occurred after a clash between two factions of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), where members of one faction vandalized the shops belonging to members of the other faction. Additional reports by Bangladeshi media featuring the viral video and confirming that the visuals are from Faridpur, Bangladesh, can be seen here.

To learn more about this incident, we conducted a relevant keyword search in Bengali. This search led us to several news reports published by Bangladeshi media (here, here, here, here, and here) featuring keyframes from the viral video. According to these reports, the incident occurred on 14 August 2024 in Boalmari Upazila, Faridpur District, Bangladesh. The reports further stated that there was a dispute between two factions of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). As a result, workers from one faction attacked the shop of Sanjay Saha, president of Boalmari upazila BNP and convenor of the upazila branch of the Jatiyatabadi Swachchasebak Dal, in Faridpur. During the incident, soldiers from the Bangladesh Army arrested the attackers. The individuals arrested were identified as Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Youth Dal activists Mohammad Tutul Hossain and Dukhu Mia.
