Tweet regarding not conducting elections for the next 10 years was not made by Ranjan Gogoi

A photo of a tweet purportedly made by the former Chief Justice of India and current Rajya Sabha MP Ranjan Gogoi on not conducting elections for the next 10 years is being shared widely on social media. In the tweet, the following is mentioned – ‘To recover from the economic loss due to COVID-19, it is better not to conduct elections for the next 10 years as elections involve huge expenditure. Let Modi continue as PM’ (English translation). Let’s fact-check the claim made in the post.

Claim: Ranjan Gogoi tweeted that it is better not to conduct elections for the next 10 years.

Fact: Ranjan Gogoi does not have an official Twitter account. The account mentioned in the post does not exist now. But, when looked at the archived version of tweets made from the account, it was found that it is a ‘parody fan page’. Hence the claim made in the post is FALSE. 

When searched for the Twitter account of Ranjan Gogoi, it was found that he does not have an official account on Twitter. So, when searched for the account (@TheRanjanGoGoi) given in the post, it was found that the account does not exist now.

On looking at the archived tweets of the profile, it was found that the profile was run by a fan. In the description of the profile, the following was written – ‘parody fan page account run by fan’. So, the tweet was not made by Ranjan Gogoi.

Also, in one of the archived tweets, it was found that the profile once posted a picture of Nita Ambani.

To sum it up, a tweet regarding not conducting elections for the next 10 years was not made by Ranjan Gogoi.
