A post featuring two photos is going viral on social media (here, here, and here). The first photo shows a male Army officer receiving his insignia from two female Army officers, while the second photo shows several Army personnel carrying coffins draped with the Indian flag. The post is being shared with the claim that it depicts three members of the same family, a father and his two daughters, who were martyred while serving in the Indian Army. Let’s verify the claim made in the post in this article.

Claim: The photos show three members of the same family, father and his two daughters, martyred while serving in the Indian Army.
Fact: The photos do not show a father and his two daughters martyred in the Indian Army. The first image is from 2024 and shows Lt Gen DP Singh being piped on his promotion by his two daughters, who are both serving Army officers. The second image is from June 2018 and shows BSF personnel carrying the coffins of four colleagues killed in cross-border firing in Jammu & Kashmir’s Samba district. PIB Fact Check in an X post has also stated that the viral claim is fake. Hence, the claim made in the post is FALSE.
To verify the claim, we conducted a Google search using relevant keywords, but found no credible reports or official information confirming that a father and his two daughters were martyred while serving in the Indian Army.
To learn more about the viral photo showing a male Army officer receiving his insignia from two female officers, we conducted a Google Lens search on the screenshot. This led us to an X post dated 03 November 2024 by the Army Training Command, Indian Army, featuring the same photo. The post explains that it captures a rare and inspiring moment in the career of Lt Gen DP Singh, Sena Medal, when he was pipped by his two daughters, both serving officers in the Indian Army, on his promotion and appointment as Commandant of the Military Intelligence Training School & Depot (MINTSD), Pune.
We also found multiple media reports featuring the same photo, all reporting the same event. These reports can be viewed here, here.
We followed the same process to verify the second photo, which shows Army personnel carrying coffins draped with the Indian flag. This led us to the same image on stock photo websites Getty Images and Alamy. According to the description, the photo was taken during the wreath-laying ceremony of BSF personnel at the Paloura BSF Headquarters in Jammu in June 2018, showing members of India’s Border Security Force (BSF) carrying the coffins of four colleagues who were killed in cross-border firing from Pakistan troops.

We also found multiple media reports (here, here, and here) covering this incident. According to these reports, on 13 June 2018, four BSF personnel were killed after Pakistan Rangers violated the ceasefire along the International Border in Jammu & Kashmir’s Samba district. The firing began late on the night of 12 June in the Ramgarh sector and continued for several hours, despite the recent ceasefire agreement between both sides. The incident claimed the lives of an Assistant Commandant and three other BSF personnel.
Additionally, an X post by PIB Fact Check on 17 October 2025 debunked the viral claim, stating that the post wrongly claimed a father and his two daughters in the Indian Army were martyred, and clarified that both images being circulated were unrelated.
To sum up, these viral photos do not show a father and his two daughters martyred while serving in the Indian Army; the claim is fake.
