Several Indian media outlets reported a video (here, here, here, here and here) showing a group of people brutally beating a man with stones and boulders on a road, claiming it depicts a Hindu man being lynched by Muslims in Bangladesh. Let’s examine the truth behind this claim.

Claim: A Hindu man was reportedly lynched by Muslims in Bangladesh, portrayed as an act of religious violence against Hindus.
Fact: The video actually shows Lal Chand alias Sohag, a Muslim man, being beaten to death in front of Mitford Hospital in Dhaka on 9 July 2025, reportedly over a financial dispute. The Bangladesh Government’s Fact Check Unit confirmed that the victim was Muslim, not Hindu. Hence the claim is FALSE.
To find the truth, we performed a reverse image search on Google, which led us to YouTube videos from several Bangladeshi media outlets reporting the same visuals (here, here and here). According to these reports, the viral video shows Lal Chand alias Sohag (39) being beaten to death with bricks and stones by a group of people on the road in front of Gate No. 3 of Sir Salimullah Medical College and Hospital (Mitford Hospital) in Dhaka, on 9 July 2025. None of these reports mentioned that the victim was Hindu.
Further investigation led us to multiple news reports from Bangladeshi local media detailing the incident (here, here, and here). As per these reports, the attack took place in broad daylight on a busy street near Mitford Hospital in Dhaka. Members of political organisations such as Jubo Dal, Chhatra Dal are alleged to have been involved in the assault. Investigating officials and local sources indicated that the motive behind the murder was a financial dispute. Police sources also confirmed that the victim, Lal Chand, was previously associated with the Jubo Dal. A case was filed at the Dhaka Kotwali Police Station by his sister, Manjura Begum. According to Officer-in-Charge Md Moniruzzaman, four suspects have been arrested by the police and the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), and efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining individuals involved. None of these reports identified the victim as Hindu.

As a development in the case, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) announced at a press conference on 11 July 2025 the arrest of two individuals, Mahmudul and Tariq, in connection with the murder. A pistol was also recovered from Tariq during the operation.
The Fact Check Unit under the Chief Advisor to the Bangladesh Government clarified that several Indian media outlets had falsely reported the deceased, Lal Chand alias Sohag, as a Hindu. In reality, he was a Muslim, and his parents have been identified as Md Ayub Ali and Alia Begum (archived source). This clarification confirms that the victim was not Hindu.

To sum up, the man who was lynched and killed in Bangladesh is not a Hindu, he was a Muslim.
