A video is being widely shared on Facebook with the claim that it shows oppression on Hindus in Pakistan. In the video, an elderly couple can be seen thrashed by the Police. Let’s check the veracity of the claim made in the post.
Claim: Video of a ‘Hindu’ couple being thrashed by the Police in Pakistan.
Fact: In the video, the elderly couple being mistreated by the Police are not ‘Hindu’. The video shows Muhammad Idrees and Naseem Bibi being thrashed by the Multan police for staging a protest outside the office of Multan Development Authority demanding compensation for the land the authority had bought from them. So, the claim is FALSE.
When searched on Google with keywords ‘Old couple beaten by Police’, an article of ‘GeoTv’ with a news video that had similar visuals was found. As per this article, in November 2017, an elderly couple Muhammad Idrees and Naseem Bibi were thrashed by the police outside the office of the Multan Development Authority for demanding compensation for the 500 acres land the authority had bought from them. There is no communal angle to the incident and also, victims are not ‘Hindu’. More information regarding the incident can be found here and here.
