A statement attributed to cricketer Sunil Gavaskar which reads, ‘‘It should be a matter of utter shame for us as Indians for politicizing, ruining and basically hijacking this beautiful game of cricket. BCCI has let India down and tonight’s results are a testimony of it,’’  is doing the rounds on social media. Allegedly, Gavaskar made this statement on NDTV after the India vs. Pakistan Asia Cup match that was held on 2 September 2023. Let’s fact-check this claim through this article.

Claim: Sunil Gavaskar said that BCCI has let India down, after the India vs. Pakistan cricket match in Asia Cup 2023.

Fact: There are no reports of Sunil Gavaskar making such critical remarks against the BCCI recently after the India vs. Pakistan Asia Cup cricket match in 2023. Sunil Gavaskar’s son Rohan Gavaskar has refuted this claim. Taking to Twitter (X), he said that this was a completely fabricated statement. Hence, the claim made in the post is False.

Searching the internet with relevant keywords regarding Sunil Gavaskar making such remarks on BCCI after the latest Asia Cup match between India and Pakistan led us to a tweet from Rohan Gavaskar. Rohan is a former Indian cricketer and son of Sunil Gavaskar. Stating that this claim is false, he quoted one such tweet propagating this message, “This is a completely fabricated statement attributed to my father. He hasn’t made this statement and someone is just trying to create mischief. It’s absolutely ridiculous that people would use his name to get more engagement . Please retweet so that the truth prevails.”

According to Rohan Gavaskar, his father is in contract with India today. This makes it certain that he wouldn’t have spoken to NDTV, which is being claimed in the viral message.

Further search on the internet revealed to us that Sunil Gavaskar had given a mid-match interview and a post-match interview to India Today on 2 September 2023, which validates the argument made by Rohan Gavaskar that his father is “under contract with India Today and wouldn’t speak to NDTV.” Sunil Gavaskar has not made any critical remarks on BCCI in these interviews.

Also, to cross-check whether Sunil Gavaskar spoke anything negative in regard to BCCI (either to NDTV or to any other media outlet in general), we performed a keyword search on the internet leading us to no credible source of information.

To sum up, Sunil Gavaskar has not made these critical remarks against the BCCI on Team India’s performance after the India vs. Pakistan cricket match in Asia Cup 2023.
