Ratan Tata hasn’t made any statement about linking liquor sale to Aadhaar card

A post is being widely shared on social media claiming that Ratan Tata had said, “Liquor sales should be sold through Aadhaar card. Government food subsidies should be stopped for alcohol buyers”. Let us fact-check the claim made in the post.

Claim: Ratan Tata’s made a statement about linking liquor sale to Aadhaar card.

Fact: Ratan Tata never made such a statement on any of his official social media handles. Ratan Tata himself clarified through an Instagram story, that such a statement attributed to him was not made by him; and that it was fake news. Hence, the claim made in the post is FALSE.

When we searched to check whether Industrialist Ratan Tata had made such a statement about selling liquor through Aadhaar, it is found out that Ratan Tata had never made such a statement on any of his official social media handles – Twitter, Instagram. If Ratan Tata had made such a statement, several mainstream media outlets would have published articles reporting the same, but we could not find any.

It had been reported by news outlets (here and here), that Ratan Tata himself clarified through an Instagram Story in September 2021, that the statement attributed to him was not said by him; and that it was fake news. The screenshot shared by Ratan Tata in his Story is the same as the viral post.

Earlier, similar messages with different contexts were attributed to Ratan Tata on social media. To sum it up, Ratan Tata hasn’t made any statement about linking liquor sale to Aadhaar card.
