Old video of flood-hit Marina beach is being passed off as a recent one.

A post with a video showing a beach and accompanying roads filled with rainwater is being shared with the claim that the video shows the present situation of Marina beach, in the light of Nivar Cyclone which caused heavy rains in Chennai. Even news agencies like Prasar Bharati and DD news shared this video claiming the video shows the current situation at Marina beach. Through this article let’s fact-check the claim made in the post.

Claim: Marina beach and accompanying roads inundated with rainwater due to Nivar Cyclone

Fact: This video is on YouTube at least since 2017. Few verified YouTube channels and Tamil local news channels shared this video back in 2017 with the claim that the video shows flood-hit Marina beach. However, we could not find any credible evidence to establishing that this video is related to the 2017 Chennai floods. Hence the claim made in the post is MISLEADING.

YouTube search with Keywords ‘Chennai marina beach floods’ led us to a 2017 local news video which showed the same visuals. According to the report, this video shows Marina beach and accompanying roads inundated with flood water.

Even a few other verified YouTube channels shared this video back in 2017 claiming that the video shows the situation of flood-hit Marina beach. These videos can be seen here and here. Also, there are many similar videos on YouTube which are at least three years old.

Further Google search with relevant keywords led us to multiple news articles which reported the 2017 Chennai floods. These news articles carried images of Marina beach inundated with flood water. These news articles can be read here and here.

All these prove that this video does not show the current situation of Marina beach in the light of heavy rains due to Nivar Cyclone. However, we could not find any credible evidence to establish that this video is related to the 2017 Chennai floods. 

To sum it up, this video does not show the current situation at Marina beach in the light of rains caused by Nivar cyclone.
