Old video from Assam shared as the recent visuals of a leopard attack on a car in Mumbai

A video is being shared on social media claiming it is the recent visuals of a leopard attack on a four-wheeler in the Goregaon area in Mumbai. Let’s verify the claim made in the post.

Claim: Recent video of a leopard attack on a car in Goregaon, Mumbai. 

Fact: The video shared in the post shows old footage of a leopard jumping over a barbed wire fence and attacking a four-wheeler in Jorhat, Assam. The incident shown in the video took place in December 2022. The video does not show a leopard attack in the Goregaon area in Mumbai. Hence, the claim made in the post is False. 

On reverse image search of the screenshots of the video, a photo showing similar visuals of a leopard attacking a four-wheeler car was found in a news article published in December 2022. This news website reported it is the visuals from Jorhat city in Assam. When we searched for further sources using this information, we found the same video in an article published by the NDTV news website on 27 December 2022. ‘NDTV’ reported it is the visuals of a leopard jumping over a barbed wire fence and attacking a four-wheeler in Jorhat, Assam.

As per these reports, at least 15 people including forest officials and the residents of Rain Forest Research Institute (RFRI) were injured in a series of attacks by a leopard on the prowl in Assam’s Jorhat. Reporting the complete details of the incident, several other news websites have also published articles and videos in December 2022. They can be seen here, here and here.  

Lately, there are news reports about a leopard attacking street dogs in Shirur town in the Pune district near Mumbai. But the video shared in the post is old and is from Assam, not from Mumbai as claimed in the post.

To sum it up, an old video from Assam was shared as the recent visuals of a leopard attack on a car in Mumbai.
