In light of the recent communal violence that broke out in Haryana’s Nuh district at the end of July 2023, a video depicting a policeman arresting two women and wielding a stick has been widely shared as the recent instance of police apprehending two Muslim women in connection with the recent Nuh (Mewat) violence. Let’s verify the claim made in the post.
Claim: Recent visuals of police apprehending two Muslim women in connection with the recent Nuh (Mewat) violence.
Fact: This video depicts an incident that occurred three years ago in April 2020, in Utawar village, Palwal district, Haryana. The police had apprehended two family members of a person accused in a cow slaughter case, suspecting their engagement in relation to the case, yet they were subsequently released on the very same day. The viral video holds no connection with the recent Nuh violence. Hence, the claim made in the post is FALSE.
Upon conducting a reverse image search of the viral video’s keyframes, we arrived at the same video that had been uploaded on Twitter on 24 April 2020 by multiple users (here & here). One user who shared the video attributed it to an incident from Utawar village in the Palwal district of Haryana.
Taking a cue from this, we conducted a keyword search and came across an article by Aaj Tak. According to this report, the incident in question transpired in April 2020 in Uttawar village, located in the Palwal district of Haryana. During this occurrence, the Utawar police had ventured into the village on a mission to locate a criminal accused of cow slaughter. However, the suspect’s family members purportedly assaulted and displayed unruly behaviour towards the police officers involved in the search, in addition to vandalizing their vehicles. As the situation grew more precarious, the police returned with additional force.
Utawar’s police head constable, Vicky, indicated that they had apprehended the family members of the accused during that period, suspecting their involvement in connection with a previous case of cow slaughter. However, they were subsequently released on the very same day. As a result, it becomes evident that the widely circulated viral video bears no association with the recent Nuh violence.
To sum it up, an unrelated old video is being circulated, falsely portraying it as an instance of the police apprehending Muslim women involved in the recent Haryana riots.
