A controversy erupted over alleged vulgar comments made by podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia in the show India’s Got Latent, hosted by comedian Samay Raina. Multiple FIRs were filed against him, Raina, and others linked to the show (here, here, and here). Amid this, a video is being shared on social media (here, and here) claiming that these visuals show Samay Raina and Ranveer Allahbadia being arrested from their home by the police. Let’s verify the truth behind the video in this article.
Claim: Video shows Samay Raina and Ranveer Allahbadia being arrested from their home by the police.
Fact: The viral video dates back to 13 August 2023 and shows the detention of Hriday Shankar and Daya Shankar over a parking dispute in Noida, as confirmed by the FIR. Meanwhile, on 18 February 2025, the Supreme Court granted Ranveer Allahbadia protection from arrest, while Maharashtra Cyber Cell denied Samay Raina’s request to record his statement remotely. No reports confirm their arrest from home. Hence, the claim made in the post is FALSE.
To verify the claim, we conducted a Google keyword search about the arrest of Samay Raina and Ranveer Allahbadia and learned that on 18 February 2025, the Supreme Court granted Allahbadia protection from arrest over multiple FIRs related to a crass joke on India’s Got Latent. Meanwhile, Maharashtra Cyber Cell rejected Raina’s plea to record his statement via video conferencing, as he is in the US until 17 March. He has been instructed to appear before the agency in person. We found no reports confirming their arrest at the time of publishing this article.
To verify the viral video, we conducted a reverse image search using its keyframes and found multiple news reports (here and here) (archived here and here) dated 14 August 2023, which featured a screenshot from the same viral video. According to the report, the footage depicts a fight over parking in a Greater Noida housing society, during which two people were arrested.
We also found a response (archived) from Noida Police on X, dated 14 August 2023. In the post, Noida Police stated that on 13 August 2023, a parking dispute broke out among some individuals at Flora Heritage Society in the Bisrakh police station area. When the Bisrakh police arrived to resolve the situation, the crowd obstructed police operations. A case was registered at the local police station, and as part of legal action, two individuals were taken into custody, while an investigation against other unidentified persons is ongoing.
We also accessed a copy of the FIR related to this case to identify the names of the two individuals arrested. The FIR lists the arrested individuals as Hriday Shankar and Daya Shankar.
To sum up, an old and unrelated video from Noida of two individuals being detained over a parking dispute is falsely shared as visuals of Samay Raina and Ranveer Allahbadia’s arrest.
