Manmohan Singh was not the PM during this meet with Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe

Photo of Sonia Gandhi and Manmohan Singh with Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe is being shared widely on social media claiming that the photo was captured when Manmohan Singh was the Prime Minister of India. In the photo, Sonia Gandhi can be seen seated in a prominent seat while Manmohan Singh was sitting beside her at a distance along with Rahul Gandhi. Let’s fact-check the claim made in the post.

Claim: Sonia Gandhi seated in the prominent seat in a bilateral meeting when Manmohan Singh was the Prime Minister.

Fact: The photo was taken in 2017 when the then Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe visited India. Manmohan Singh served as the Prime Minister of India between 2004 – 2014. Hence the claim made in the post is FALSE.

When the photo was subjected to reverse image search, many search results had the same picture. As per PTI, the photo was taken in 2017 and it has the following description – ‘Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe in a meeting with Congress President Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi on Thursday. Former PM Manmohan Singh and party vice-president Rahul Gandhi are also seen’. 

The same photo can also be seen in the tweet of ‘ANI’ that reported about Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe’s visit to India in 2017. 

Manmohan Singh was the 13th Prime Minister of India from and he served during the period 2004 – 2014. So, the photo was taken after the tenure of Manmohan Singh as the Prime Minister of India. 

To sum it up, photo of Sonia Gandhi seated in a prominent seat during a meet with Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe in 2017 shared as the one captured when Manmohan Singh was the Prime Minister.
