A post accompanying a list of selected candidates in West Bengal police Sub Inspector recruitment 2019 is widely shared across social media platforms with the claim that not a single Hindu was selected and all those selected were Muslims. Through this article let’s fact-check the claim made in the post.

Claim: In West Bengal Police Sub Inspector recruitment 2019, no Hindu got selected, all the selected candidates are Muslims.

Fact: The viral list shows only the candidates selected under the OBC-A category in West Bengal police Sub Inspector recruitment 2019. West Bengal has a total of 80 sub-castes under the OBC-A category, of which 72 sub-castes belongs to the Muslim religion. Therefore, the majority of those selected under the OBC-A category are Muslims. Hindus constitute the majority among those selected under other different categories (OBC-B, SC, ST, UR) in this recruitment. Furthermore, Hindus outnumber Muslims in the total selection in this recruitment. Hence, the claim made in the post is FALSE.

To check the veracity of the viral claim, we visited the West Bengal police website and found that the West Bengal police recruitment board has released the results related to Police Sub Inspector (Armed (AB) & Unarmed (UB)) Recruitment Notification 2019 on 18 June 2021. The details of the candidates selected in this recruitment are made available on the West Bengal Police website as per the categories (OBC-B, SC, ST, UR) in which they were selected. Although the list in the post is related to these results, it is only a list of 50 people who were selected under the UB category in OBC-A category.

Although there are no details about the religion of those selected in this list, if we observe their names, it is understood that many of the candidates who were are Muslims. This is because, in the state of West Bengal, a total of 80 sub-castes are classified under the OBC-A category. Out of these 80 sub-castes, 72 (90%) sub-castes belong to the Muslim religion and only 8 sub-castes belong to other religions. Due to the presence of a large percentage of Muslim castes in the OBC-A category, most of the selected candidates in the UB category under the OBC-A category are Muslims.

When we look at the names of those selected in other categories (OBC-B, SC, ST, UR) in both Armed (AB) and Unarmed (UB) sections, we can observe that the majority of them belong to the Hindu religion. Moreover, considering the overall selections in this recruitment, Hindus outnumber Muslims. From this, it is evident that Hindus were also selected in the sub-inspector recruitment 2019 in West Bengal.

Later in 2023, the West Bengal Police recruitment board released results related to recruitment to the Post of Sub-Inspector / Lady Sub-Inspector of Police notification – 2020. When we examine these results, we can observe that the majority of the selected candidates are Hindus. Recently, the West Bengal Police recruitment board has released various notifications that include vacancies for all categories (OBC-A, OBC-B, SC, ST, UR).

To sum it up, in the West Bengal Police Sub Inspector Recruitment 2019, not only Muslims but Hindus were also selected.
