An image of PM Modi washing his hands at a washbasin is being widely shared claiming that his photo was taken inside a toilet. Let’s verify the claim made in the post.
Claim: Photographer capturing PM Modi cleaning his hands inside a toilet.
Fact: This picture was taken when PM Modi was washing his hands at the entrance of Gurudwara Rakab Ganj Sahib in Delhi in December 2020. This is an open wash area where devotees wash their hands and feet before entering Gurudwara. Hence the claim made in the post is MISLEADING.
We ran a reverse image search using the viral image and found the uncropped version of the same image featured in an article published by ‘The Free Press Journal’ on 20 December 2020. According to this article, these pictures were taken when PM Modi visited Gurudwara Rakab Ganj Sahib in Delhi on the occasion of 400th Prakash Parv of Guru Teg Bahadur. However, in this image, one can see the steps beside the washbasin where Modi is cleaning his hands.
Taking a cue from this, we searched for visuals of this Gurudwara and found Google images of the wash area setup beside the entrance steps. Visuals of devotees cleaning their hands and feet at wash area before entering this Gurudwara can be seen here. Also, it is a usual practise to wash one’s hands and feet before entering a Gurudwara.
To sum it up, image show PM Modi washing his hands at the entrance of the Gurudwara, not inside a toilet
