In the light of recently released 2021 UPSC civil services examination result, a social media post that claims all the top four rankers of the exam are women is being widely shared. The post lists the names of all purported women toppers. Through this article let’s fact-check the claim made in the post.

Claim: All the top four rankers of the recently released 2021 UPSC results are women.

Fact: In the recently released results of 2021 UPSC, only the top three rankers are women, whereas the fourth rank is secured by a male candidate, whose name is Aishwarya Verma, from Madhya Pradesh. In all likelihood, the name of the fourth ranker could have led to the confusion. Several news reports have published the photo of the fourth ranker. Hence the claim made in the post is MISLEADING.

UPSC recently on 30 May 2022, announced the results of the Civil Services Examination (CSE) 2021. As per results the top three ranks are secured by women candidates. Shruthi Sharma, Ankita Agarwal and Gamini Singla secured the top three positions respectively.

The fourth rank is secured by a male candidate Aishwarya Verma from  Madhya Pradesh. Most likely, Aishwarya Verma’s name could have led to the confusion of mistaking his identity as woman. However, several news agencies have reported Aishwarya Verma as a male and have also published his file photo (here & here).

Initially after the announcement of results, few news agencies have reported that all the top four ranks are secured by women (here & here). News articles like these could have also further amplified the misconception.

To sum it up, only the top three rankers of UPSC civil services are women; the fourth rank is secured by a male candidate.
