Footage of Patna police lathi-charging BJP workers is falsely shared as that of Mewat, Haryana


A video is being shared on social media in which police are seen hitting a huge crowd with batons. It is being claimed that the footage shows police lati-charging the Mewat rioters. Let’s fact-check this claim through this article.

Claim: Footage shows police in Mewat thrashing the rioters.

Fact: This footage actually shows the police lathi-charge of BJP workers in Patna, Bihar. Hence the claim made in the post is False.

Upon carefully observing the footage, we found a shop named Chhabra Sports and Fitness in front of which some of the footage was shot. A quick Google search revealed that this shop is located in Patna, Bihar. Here you can see the google street view of this shop.

Taking this as a clue, we performed a keyword search on the internet, leading us to various news reports (here, here, and here) from July 2023 concerning this video. One of those reports contained the footage in the viral video. You can find the clips used in the viral video here and here. As per the news reports, in July 2023, Patna police lathi-charged BJP workers who were taking part in a march to ‘Vidhan Sabha seeking a reply on the issue of 10 lakh jobs promised by the Grand Alliance government…’  Reportedly, ‘ the BJP has alleged that one of its leaders died..’ in this incident.

To sum up, a video related to a lathi-charge incident in Patna is falsely shared as Mewat, Haryana.
