A video of former German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and Prime Minister Modi is going viral on social media (here, here, and here) following the 16th BRICS summit, which took place in Kazan, Russia, from 22 to 24 October 2024. It is being shared with the claim that Xi Jinping avoided shaking hands with PM Modi. Let’s verify the claim made in the post.

The Archived post can be seen here.

Claim: Chinese President Xi Jinping refrained from shaking hands with PM Modi during the BRICS summit.

Fact: The viral video is incomplete. The video was recorded during the 16th BRICS Summit held in October 2024. Multiple media reports highlighted the video showing Xi Jinping shaking hands with PM Modi. Hence, the claim made in the post is FALSE.

On performing a reverse image search of the keyframes from the viral clip featuring PM Modi and Xi Jinping, we discovered that the video was recorded during the 2024 BRICS Summit. ANI shared this clip on its official YouTube channel on 23 October 2024, with the caption “Historic Handshake.” Several media outlets also reported on this event, which can be found here, here, and here. The viral video is a clipped & incomplete version of this video.

We conducted a reverse image search on keyframes from the video featuring PM Modi and German Chancellor Angela Merkel. This led us to a longer version of the video on Narendra Modi’s official YouTube channel, from a live stream on 30 May 2017. The video is titled “Prime Minister Narendra Modi with Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel at Exchange of Agreements and Press Statements.” Media outlets also covered this event (here and here).

It is clear from this evidence that incomplete video clips are being shared with false claims.

To sum up, clipped videos are being shared, claiming that Angela Merkel and Xi Jinping refused to shake hands with PM Modi.
