A video is being widely shared on Facebook with the claim that it shows Muslims at a detention centre in Assam. Let’s analyze the authenticity of the claim.

The archived version of the post can be found here.

Claim: Video shows Muslims at a detention centre in Assam.

Fact: The video is from CCTV footage of prison in Sri Lanka and isn’t related to India. Hence, the claim is FALSE.

When searched on Facebook with the text ‘Muslims in detention camp in Assam’, similar posts with the same video were found. But, the video in them had the watermark ‘Truthlanka.com’. So, when searched on Google with the text ‘brutal assault in a sri lanka detention centre’, the same video (shorter version) was found in the search result of ‘Asia Times’. From that article, it was found that ‘Angunakolapelessa’ (Sri Lanka) prison officials had treated the inmates badly by beating them with batons and forcing them to crawl forcibly. Further, a probe was ordered into the incident, after the CCTV footage was leaked. So, the video has nothing to do with India and the claim is false.

To conclude, the CCTV footage of prison in Sri Lanka is being shared as ‘Muslims in Assam detention centres’.
