An old video of a bridge collapse in Jammu is falsely shared linking it to Gujarat- Maharashtra

In the context of severe floods in Maharashtra, a video through a Facebook post is being shared widely on social media. The video shows a portion of a bridge collapsing into an overflowing stream. The post claims, “अक्कलकुवा   ते   अंकलेश्वर   पूल तुटला  “ (English translation: “ Akkalkuwa to Ankleshwar bridge brokedown”). Let’s fact-check the claim made in the post.

Claim: Visuals of a collapsed bridge that connects Akkalkuwa (town in Maharashtra) to Ankleshwar (city in Gujarat).

Fact: This incident took place in Jammu’s Gadigarh area on 26 August 2020. Due to heavy rainfall in the region, the water level in the stream increased leading to the collapse of a large portion of the bridge. According to a local resident, the bridge is called Bablian bridge. Hence the claim made in the post is MISLEADING

Reverse image search of the screenshots from the video led us to a 2020 Facebook post with the same video, but the description says, “A bridge in Dharap village on Jammu city’s outskirts collapses due to flash flood triggered by heavy rainfall.” Taking a cue from this, we searched the internet with relevant keywords and found several media agencies reporting the incident”. These reports can be seen here, here and here

According to these reports, A portion of a bridge in Jammu’s Gadigarh area collapsed, following heavy rainfall in the region. As per the visuals, the bridge is located on a stream. Due to heavy rainfall in the area, the water level in the stream increased leading to the collapse of a large portion of the bridge on 26 August 2020. According to a local resident, the bridge is called Bablian bridge.

To sum it up, 2020 visuals of a bridge collapse in Jammu & Kashmir is shared as a bridge that connects Maharashtra and Gujarat.
