An old microburst video in Austria is shared as a cloudburst video in Sikkim

A video containing the visuals of a cloud burst is being shared claiming that it took place in Sikkim and that it led to a rise in the water level by 15 feet and caused about 24 deaths. Let’s verify the claim made in the post.

Claim: Visuals show recent cloud burst incident in Sikkim.

Fact: This is a timelapse video of a microburst captured by the mountaineer Peter Marier in Lake Millstatt, Austria in 2018. Hence, the claim made in the post is False.

On conducting the reverse image search of the screenshots of the video, we found that the same video was uploaded on the Nav Bharath Times YouTube channel on 29 July 2023 with the caption ‘See how cloud burst happens.’

Further research about the video led us to articles published by Insider and News18. We found that this is a timelapse video of a microburst captured by the mountaineer Peter Marier while he was staying in Lake Millstatt, Austria in 2018.

Based on the above clues, we found the original video posted by Peter on his YouTube channel and Instagram page. 

Cloudburst is an extreme weather event characterized by the occurrence of a large amount of rainfall over a small area within a short span of time. On the other hand, a microburst is a small column of intense and localized sinking air that results in a violent outrush of air at the ground.

To sum up, an old microburst video in Austria is shared as a cloudburst video in Sikkim.
