An old ‘Great Ethiopian Marathon’ photo is falsely shared as visuals of a Delhi rally in support of Arvind Kejriwal

A photograph (here, here and here) of a large crowd on a road has been making the rounds on social media with the claim that it shows a massive rally held in Delhi in support of Arvind Kejriwal, who is in Tihar Jail under judicial custody. We fact-check this claim through this article.

You can find an archived version of this post here.

Claim: The photograph shows a huge rally that took place in Delhi in support of Arvind Kejriwal.

Fact: The image in question is, in fact, taken from the annual Great Ethiopian Run and bears no connection to Delhi or Arvind Kejriwal. Therefore, the claim made in the post is False.

We began verifying this viral claim with a reverse image search of the photograph. This led us to the same image on the MDG Achievement Fund’s website (Archived version).

According to the accompanying caption, the picture was taken during the Great Ethiopian Run. Further investigation revealed a version of the same image in a 2017 CNN article about Ethiopia, confirming the picture’s origin.

While it is true that protests have erupted (here and here) in the country after the arrest of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, this particular image has no connection with these events. The viral post falsely relates a photograph from an unrelated event to these contemporary events.

To sum up, the image that claimed to show a large rally in Delhi in support of Arvind Kejriwal is actually from the Great Ethiopian Run, Ethiopia.
